Wilburton Animal Control is responsible for protecting public health and safety through the enforcement of local animal ordinances, responding to complaints involving stray, abandoned, dangerous, or neglected animals, investigating animal bites and cruelty concerns, assisting with lost and found pets, promoting responsible pet ownership, and maintaining the city pound. Residents who need assistance with animal-related issues may contact Animal Control during normal business hours, while emergency situations involving immediate threats to people or animals should be reported to Latimer County Dispatch or 911.
Animals picked up and impounded by Animal Control are subject to a $20 pickup fee plus a $7 per-night kennel fee for each night the animal is housed. Before an impounded animal can be released, owners must ensure the animal is properly registered with the City if it is not already. Registration is $5 and requires proof of current rabies vaccination administered by a licensed veterinarian.
If an animal is impounded as a result of a traffic stop or by the Wilburton Police Department or County Sheriff’s Office, all release and retrieval procedures must be handled directly between the respective law enforcement agency that initiated the impound and the City of Wilburton City Clerk's Office.
Currently, the City of Wilburton Animal Control Department does not have the resources for pick up, impounding, or relocating free-roaming, stray, or feral cats and does not accept surrendered pets of any kind. Residents who need to rehome an animal or require assistance with stray or feral cats are encouraged to contact local rescue organizations, animal welfare groups, veterinarians, or regional animal shelters for available resources. Animal Control may respond only in cases involving injured animals, public safety concerns, ordinance violations, or situations otherwise required by law.
